Niels Helsloot studied Dutch linguistics and literature at the Free University (Amsterdam) and philosophy at the University of Amsterdam. At the end of last year he obtained his doctorate from the Erasmus University Rotterdam with a dissertation entitled Gaya scienza, Nietzsche as a friend. For the Nieuwsbrief he takes five steps from 'Dutch' to 'Nietzsche' – and back. The argument starts from Nietzsche, and runs through postmodernism, laughter and science, to language.
