Friedrich Nietzsche is usually considered a philosopher, and not a specialized scientist. Yet, at the gymnasium and the university, he was trained as a classical philologist, and he worked as a professor in philology for ten years. The period of his professorate, from 1869 to 1879, was also the time of the rise of linguistics as a university science.
